Update: Scoutmaster Says 'Perversion Files' Doesn't Involve Troop 959

As part of the settlement in a multi-million-dollar sex abuse case, files containing information on thousands of possible crimes were released Thursday.

Update: Friday, 11:11 a.m.

In an interview with La Mesa Today, Randy Seefeldt, scoutmaster with Troop 959 said that he is aware of the case listed in the national "perversion files" database, released Thursday.

But Seefeldt said that the case in question did not involve crimes against any members of his troop.

"The man involved was a member of BSA, but this case didn't have anything to do with hurting our boys,'' Seefeldt told La Mesa Today.

BSA Troop 959 is currently being sponsored by San Carlos United Methodist Church, just outside the city limits.  La Mesa councilmember Ernie Ewin emailed Patch Friday morning saying he would contact the city manager's office to find out if the Troop was sponsored in the city on the date of the alleged incident, in 2004.

Additionally, there is no official record of Troop 39 operating in La Mesa, the second alleged incident in 2002. An internet search listed two other Troop 39 operations, one in Cummings, GA and on in Chapel Hill, NC.

Seefeldt told La Mesa Today that it is a possible error in the national database.

Original story:

Two La Mesa cases of possible sexual abuse by Boy Scout troop leaders and volunteers may be part of the organization's "perversion files" released Thursday to the public.

For decades, the Boy Scouts of America kept the files as a way to keep volunteers suspected of inappopriate sexual behavior away from children. The cases were not shared with parents or police.

The files became public Thursday as part of an $18.5 million settlement between the Boy Scouts and a victim.

The Los Angeles Times has created a list of the cases by year, city, state and troop number. The newspaper's list includes the time period covered by Thursday's release (1965 to 1985), but also other accusations and documents gathered and released in various court cases.

Two cases are in La Mesa, according to the Times files.
