U-T San Diego Calls for Transparency, Doesn’t Subscribe for Its Own Sake

Sam Ciccati: "It would be professional of the U-T if it followed its own editorial stance regarding transparency and inform readers of rate increases and give them a choice of continuing or cancelling their subscription."

To the editor:

The U-T San Diego has had many editorials denouncing the lack of transparency in state and local government, school districts and other organizations.  Yet it fails to do so in its own business and customer relations.

The rates for a daily subscription to the U-T in January 2012 was $19.76; in December 2012 it was $26.63. That is a 34 percent increase in one year!

In no instance has the U-T informed subscribers as to the new rate and when it would take effect – it simply enacted it. I found out inadvertently when I went through my credit card statements for the year.

It would be professional of the U-T if it followed its own editorial stance regarding transparency and inform readers of rate increases and give them a choice of continuing or cancelling their subscription. I challenge the U-T to print this letter.
