The James Irvine Foundation Awards $1.4 Million Grant to Institute for Evidence-Based Change in Support of Linked Learning

The James Irvine Foundation has awarded the Institute for Evidence-Based Change (IEBC) a $1.4 million, one-year grant to continue data support for the Linked Learning District Initiative and to expand the work across California.  IEBC data support includes systems, products, and services to improve data use among Linked Learning districts.

According to Brad Phillips, PhD, President/CEO, IEBC, “There is a real hunger in the education community for collecting, reporting and using student academic progress and outcome data better. We appreciate the support of the Irvine Foundation in selecting us to help educators grapple with, and understand, what data and other evidence can tell them about the impact of Linked Learning on student progress and outcomes.“

Linked Learning is a career pathways initiative that integrates rigorous academics with career-based learning and real-world workplace experiences and student support services. Its goal is to tap into young people’s motivation to understand that education matters. The Linked Learning approach transforms education into a personally relevant, wholly engaging experience - and opens students to career and college opportunities they never imagined.  IEBC’s work ensures Linked Learning districts are using student academic progress and outcome data to drive program improvement and accurately report their work. IEBC also supports Linked Learning research endeavors by providing student data to research organizations exploring the impact of Linked Learning under agreement with the districts.

IEBC has been funded since 2011 by the Irvine Foundation for multiple major projects to support its Linked Learning initiative, including development of nine curriculum guides that aligned and integrated high school and college English and math curricula with career and technical education coursework that can be taught at the high school and college levels. The guides (SLATE) are available on the IEBC website.
