Poll: Who’s at Fault for the High Price of Gasoline in the County?

White House report makes case that the Obama administration is doing all it can. Your thoughts?

The average area price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline dipped Monday to $4.378, but the average price is still 51.3 cents higher than a month ago and 40.7 cents greater than a year ago, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service noted by City News Service.

The White House is having its say, notes a Huffington Post story, unveiling a report Monday (attached) that boasts of successes by the administration in making America more energy independent over the past three years. But why are San Diego County motorists paying so much? Who bears the most blame?

The Patch Poll debuts in San Diego County. Let us know what you think. To suggest questions or topics, write to ken.stone@patch.com.

Dave, do the folks in Washington DC wind you up and turn you loose or is that done by someone locally?
Tom Yarnall March 14, 2012 at 02:36 pm
I was responding to Doug.

Smart Meters are responsible.
Doug Curlee March 14, 2012 at 03:16 pm
well, of COURSE they are, craig..we should have realized that all along..
they're reponsible for everything else wrong in the world.. why not gas prices?.. good call..:-) doug
Kevin George March 14, 2012 at 03:31 pm
My dog can't sleep, I have a new pimple and my 92year old mothers eyesight is going bad.
What other proof do you need that they are responsible for this too.
Kevin George March 14, 2012 at 03:33 pm
Kathy.........."If the government wants to pay for it'.
I'm hoping you know better than that.
Craig Maxwell March 14, 2012 at 03:42 pm
The only reason you guys weren't smart enough to think of it first is,...well,...you guess it--Smart Meters.

I think Susan Brinchman should get on this. She's a real pro and could get some answers post haste, unless she has a head ache or heart palpation's.
Greger Fagelberg March 14, 2012 at 04:35 pm
$ 4.37 seems like a bargain-price as we here in Finland pay 1.70 euro for one liter gasoline 98 oktan. In dollars that would be about $ 6.44 for a gallon. So folks, you are still quite happy with your gas-prices.

Kevin,
Thanks for the links. A campaign ad from Obama in 08 and then Nancy Pelosi from 2007? C'mon now. My point was that there is absolutely no correlation between fuel costs and who sits in the oval office. Just like there is no correlation between stock market rallies and who sits in the oval office.
Tom Yarnall March 14, 2012 at 04:45 pm
Yes Greger, but you have an enormous tax burden per gallon to pay for your socialist form of government. We don't have Socialism-------yet. Our first big step in that direction will come when the Affordable Heath Care Act is implemented where millions will get free health care. Sound familiar?
Tom Yarnall March 14, 2012 at 04:57 pm
By the way Greger, we are honing in on $ 6.44 per gallon quite rapidly. If Obama gets four more years I'll bet we'll be in your ballpark by 2017.
Craig Maxwell March 14, 2012 at 04:57 pm
They must have really Smart Meters--Brilliant Meters!--in Finland.
Kevin George March 14, 2012 at 05:00 pm
My point was that Democrats including the current President disagreed with you and had no problem blaming the President when the shoe was on the other foot.
James Jones March 14, 2012 at 05:15 pm
I've become entirely cynical when it comes to any chance of alternatives to fossil fuel being available. In the 70's, I remember waiting in line on my designated ration day to get gas, hoping to fill up before the station ran out. All the talk then was about independence from foreign oil. We've had 40 years and we have made almost no progress. We put a man on the moon in 10 years.
James Davis March 14, 2012 at 05:41 pm
Kevin,
haha now I get it :)
Greger Fagelberg March 14, 2012 at 05:53 pm
Hi folks, I miscalculated. The Finnish gas-price for one US-gallon should be 8,38 dollar! We pay 1,70 euro for a liter. One gallon is 3.785 ltr = 6.44 euro. And 6.44 euro is 8.38 dollar. So your gas is almost 50% cheaper. And Tom - we do not have a socialist government and we just got a new right-wing president.
Greger Fagelberg, Vasa, Finland
Kevin George March 14, 2012 at 06:25 pm
Which leads us back to Toms question Gregor: How much of that is taxes?
From what I have read Finland never saw a tax it didn't like. Aren't your cars taxed according to their emissions?
Tom Yarnall March 14, 2012 at 06:45 pm
Greger, at 0.8 euros per liter for taxes in Finland are 47% of the price of gasoline. 47 % of $8.38 is $3.94 per gallon. Where does all that money go if not into social programs?
Is there no such thing as a right wing Socialist?
Terri Linnell March 15, 2012 at 05:17 pm
David, it's called the 'inflation tax' aka 'hidden tax'. Many try to simplify it to supply and demand, but it's suppy and demand of paper money that makes the largest price increase in oil. The more we print, borrow, and spend the higher the prices for our goods. Then Congress can sit back and say 'it's not my fault'. Oh, yes, it is!
Komfort March 15, 2012 at 05:38 pm
Secor and Obama agree, production is up!
Sadly Obama's administration disagrees with Secor and Obama. http://www.eia.gov/analysis/requests/federallands/
David B Secor March 15, 2012 at 06:15 pm
Don't use partial information to back up your totally inaccurate conclusion. Leave that to FoxNews. Production on "federal lands" is down. But EARTH to KOMFORT - Oil production in the United States is at its highest in 10 years. And as I also pointed out, demand is at its lowest since 1997. (Sadly you don't know what you are talking about.)
Craig Maxwell March 15, 2012 at 06:18 pm
As I keep saying, Smart Meters are to blame.
(You'd acknowledge my point if your brains hadn't been fried by Smart Meters.)
David B Secor March 15, 2012 at 07:08 pm
I said it's clearly not supply and demand. And I am certainly not going to defend the Federal Reserve. But we will never return to a commodity-based (gold or any other) system. I hate to say that our money's value is based on faith, I know it sounds crazy, I won't argue that, it is crazy, but like all other major currencies, that's the way it is. The bond market always will tell you when that faith is being tested. We now live in a global economy. That's the way it is. Even after Moody's dropped our rating, the world still bought our bonds first, regardless of Moody's, because worldwide investors knew U.S. bonds were still the best. Ten year bond still hovers around 2% today.
Non-oil-using speculators manipulate the price of oil, hurting consumers and businesses that actually use oil. The spike in price has nothing to do with inflation. 80% of the futures market is speculation. Fix that? There is a part of the Dodd-Frank bill that would reign in speculators that's supposed to go into effect in October, but Republicans are fighting it. And, remember, ALL OIL,as in all oil, produced in U.S. and Canada is sold on the open world market to the highest bidder. It's not OURS. With speculators controlling the futures market, everybody (except them) loses. BTW, speculators play by the same rules Republicans want the entire economy to have - none. You may think the middle class can survive in a jungle of no rules, but they'd be bringing a WiffleBat to a gunfight.
Craig Maxwell March 15, 2012 at 07:42 pm
The president called out his rivals on green energy and accused them of failing to see the future.
“They dismiss wind power," Obama said. "Wind power." What a great idea. Why exploit fossil fuel when you can destroy countless thousands of acres of wilderness by covering them with hideously ugly solar panels and raptor-killing wind turbines? It's so "green," "renewable," and "sustainable." Or how about "algae." Now there's a bang-up bit of Obama-style bio-fuel brainstorming!
Craig Maxwell March 15, 2012 at 08:04 pm
Indeed it "blows." And the real solution, as everyone knows (is)

It was the first of its kind to supply full daily news broadcasts. The company's 24-hour coverageRead More became an immediate success and helped to launch their company from a mainly US-based platform to a world-wide sensation. It was also the first company in the US to firmly provide news coverage.Being one of the most popular sources for news in all of US history. has now gone online, and is one of the top news sites on the internet, available to subscribers world wide instantly through a web browser. While most of these organizations still report quality news, the internet has spawned a number of sites that comment more than report current news. Other sites have emerged to consolidate the top news. People should do some research before relying too much on a single service.

I heard that the landlord is using that property as a loss and does not care about renters. LooksRead More to me like it could be true. I also heard that a group from Mt Helix is trying to clean up Casa De Oro. Does anyone know for sure?
