Moms Council Question of the Week: Is Santa Depicted as Real in Your Home?

In era of Stranger Danger, how do you explain a man in red suit entering homes to leave presents?

In this space every week, the La Mesa Patch Moms Council poses a question and invites your wisdom—and chimes in themselves.

The council is captained by Mommin’ Around columnist Genevieve Suzuki. Other members of the Moms Council are Deena While, Linda Byerline and Tony Lawrence.

Now the question:

Does Santa Claus visit your home? How did you explain St. Nick to your children?

Of course Santa was a fun holiday treat! It's simply amazing that some ol' fella is generous enough to travel the entire globe in one night and give every boy and girl a special visit. Why not let kids enjoy that story? Adulthood creeps in all to fast, if we can bring joy and wonder to kids, so be it!

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus...in the Suzuki household! We love the jolly old soul and have finally gotten our daughter, Quinn, to join the fray. This year she realized a minute with Santa will probably get her the toy she's been wanting for months. She's a smart cookie - he's an effective means to her ends. Also, we really do love the Santa story. In fact, I collect Santa figures so I guess she's always going to have Santa around the house!

Just this morning, my 7-year-old asked me if I believed in Santa and the elves. I said, "Of course, who do you think brings you those presents?" She didn't seem convinced, but about an hour later, a letter showed up on our doorstop from an elf, and suddenly she believed. Our 13-year-old was brought into what my husband calls "the world's largest conspiracy" when she was 10 or 11. Rather than being sad or feeling duped, she was delighted to learn that the power of Santa is something we all have within us if we choose to share it.

Elizabeth, that is the coolest thing I've read in a while. Awesomeness.
