Phil Morell Dies at 91; Taught at Grossmont and Helix High Schools in 1950s

"Everyone he touched—either as a military officer, high school teacher or principal—came away the better for it," said a longtime friend.

Philip C. Morell—a retired Marine Corps colonel who taught at Grossmont and Helix high schools in the late 1940s and 1950s—died June 21, according to a U-T San Diego obituary.

Morell was 91, and services have been held.

“Morell taught at Grossmont High School before his military service in Korea and returned to the district in 1951, coaching and teaching at the newly opened Helix High School,” said the obituary.

Longtime friend Ben Cloud was quoted as saying: “Phil was a pillar in the community when I met him 40 years ago and he continued to grow in stature. He was proud to be a leader. Everyone he touched—either as a military officer, high school teacher or principal—came away the better for it.”
