Funeral Held in La Mesa for Teen Hit by Semi-Truck
A funeral was held for Noemi Mendez in La Mesa on Saturday.
A funeral was held at Aztlan Mortuary in La Mesa Saturday for a 15-year-old Noemi Mendez.
Noemi was killed Wednesday in Otay Mesa when she was struck by a semi-truck while crossing the street. The accident at La Media Road and state Route 905 was reported shortly after 5 p.m., according to San Diego police.
The girl was reportedly walking with her older brother and she stepped off the curb to cross as a semi truck was completing a right turn with a green light. She was struck by the truck's rear and died at the scene.

NBC San Diego reported that at the time of the accident, investigators said Noemi was using her cell phone at the time of the accident.
“Her smile would always give us a joy," Luis Moreno, a friend of Noemi told NBC. "There was something in her that would make us smile a lot; every time she'd give us a hug you'd feel joy in yourself."
