Bob Carpenter, 76; former president of the Mt. Helix Toastmasters

Plus other La Mesans in memoriam: June Matyas, 88

Like many native Midwesterners, Robert “Bob” Carpenter found the weather in San Diego to be a bit more agreeable, and once he moved from North Dakota, he immersed himself in all things S.D. He graduated from San Diego State University, worked for the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, and founded the San Carlos branch of the National Association of Investors Corp.

Robert Carpenter died Thursday, April 28, 2011. He was 76.

In addition to his involvement (including past presidency) of the Mount Helix Toastmasters Club, Carpenter couldn’t help keeping busy, even after retiring from his position as a correctional counselor for the Sheriff’s Department—his “knack for helping others,” according to his family, was put to use as executive director of the Nonprofit Federation for Housing and Community Development, which helped develop resources for low-income housing.

To continue Carpenter’s legacy of generosity and selflessness, his family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to charity in his name.

More information about Carpenter can be found on his announcement.
