Benchley-Weinberger Elementary School Hosts Open Mic

Written by Sunny Gebhardt

The Benchley Weinberger Elementary School Writers' Corner was dreamed up about five years ago by students at the school. Knowing his love for writing and talent for teaching, a few budding writers asked first grade teacher Bill Patterson if they could meet in his classroom to write together. From that point, Writers' Corner has grown to a group of more than 70 students. Children as young as 6 meet once a week, after school, to hone in their writing skills and let their imaginations run wild. Led by Bill and local author, Gordon Page, the students explore different genres of writing, with mystery and poetry high-lighted at "Open-Mic" nights through out the semester. They learn how to revise and edit and the importance of group feedback.

On May 15, Writers' Corner met for their last Open Mic at Harry Griffith Park. There, they shared their final creative stories, emceed by Dylan Page, student teacher and Writers' Corner alumnus. In the audience, Principal Patton, along with many family members and friends supported these talented and brave young writers as they said goodbye to another year of Writers' Corner and hello to summer.
