SANDAG Celebrates First Year of South Bay Expressway Success

Sunday, June 30th marked the first anniversary of toll reductions of up to 40 percent on South Bay Expressway. After a successful year, SANDAG would like to thank the many drivers who made the choice to use South Bay Expressway to avoid traffic on Interstate 805 and surface streets. The reduced tolls and increased use of the road support the SANDAG goal of increasing mobility in the region and helped SANDAG meet operations revenue targets, fund reserves, and make debt service payments.

SANDAG acquired South Bay Expressway with a different set of priorities than the previous toll-road operator, a private, for-profit entity. As a non-profit public entity, SANDAG is dedicated to easing congestion on surface streets and I-805 by making the toll road more accessible to commuters.

By reducing tolls up to 40 percent, the SANDAG Board of Directors hoped to see an increase in use of the facility and set a goal of approximately $21 million in revenue based on a traffic estimate of about 10.3 million trips.

SANDAG has surpassed these targets, with revenue exceeding $21 million and total trips increasing by 22 percent to 11.65 million. Drivers on South Bay Expressway also are saving money by taking advantage of FasTrak, the electronic toll system that allows customers to use any toll road, bridge, or express lane in California without stopping to pay. New FasTrak accounts have increased 16 percent from last year.
