WARNING - Young & Healthy Pedestrians Invading La Mesa Streets & Sidewalks

La Mesa Centennial Spring Walk or Bike to School event is set for Wednesday, May 30th.

This is a good thing!  Wednesday, May 30th is La Mesa’s Centennial Spring Walk or Bike to School Day.  Students will be packing our streets by the hundreds.

Back in the old days, most of us walked or rode our bike to school.  It was fun and it was a time for socializing with our friends.  We weren’t conscious of the fact that we were exercising.   Now, many of our kids are being dropped off or picked up which in effect causes more traffic, more pollution and less exercise.  This does not benefit anyone.

In conjunction with the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program, WalkSanDiego , the City of La Mesa and our elementary and middle schools  have been working together  to make our streets and sidewalks safer for our students as well as our residents.

Let’s  turn back the clock to a time when  walking or biking to school was the “norm”.  Let’s encourage our youth to wake up earlier,  meet up with their friends or a walking school bus and enjoy that time getting to and from school.

Tomorrrow, eight  of our La Mesa schools will be  participating in the La Mesa Centennial Spring Walk or Bike to School event.  Each school will be raffling off prizes.  Ask your kids if they know about it and then encourage them to join the festivities.  Don’t tell them that it’s good for them.  Just tell them they might win a prize. They will most likely find out on their own that they enjoy walking or riding their bike to school.
