National Night Out Against Crime Is Tuesday, August 2

Neighbors across America will be gathering together to enjoy potlucks, cookouts and other fun festivities to celebrate the 28th Annual National Night Out (NNO) Against Crime.

How many of you have an organized Neighborhood Watch on your street? How many of you wish you did? Now is the perfect time to start one on your own block. On Tuesday, August 2nd, neighbors across America will be gathering together to enjoy potlucks, cookouts and other fun festivities to celebrate the 28th Annual National Night Out (NNO) Against Crime.

What is National Night Out you ask? NNO is an annual event sponsored by the NATW (National Association of Town Watch).  The purpose of the event is to heighten awareness and strengthen participation in local anti-crime efforts.

Here in La Mesa, members of our city council and police department will visit all of the neighborhoods participating in NNO this year. This is a great time to ask questions and express any crime concerns you may have.

As you may have heard, La Mesa suffered some very discouraging due to a rash of burglaries in the first quarter of the year. For those of us who love our city, this was a mighty blow to our small town village atmosphere.

So, what can you do about it? The first thing you can do is call the police when you see something suspicious.

Emergency: Dial 9-1-1
Non-Emergency: Dial 619-667-1400

For the police to effectively solve more crimes, they need our help. Criminals don’t stand in the street waving their hands in the air when a cop drives by yelling “Hey, I’m over here...come and get me.” It is up to us to do our part and that means picking up the phone and calling the police right away when you have witnessed a crime or even suspect a crime.

The second thing you can do is start a neighborhood watch program on your block. It is much easier than you may think.  Contact Erin Jones, the crime prevention specialist with the LMPD at 619-667-7545. She will set you up with the resources you need to start your own Neighborhood Watch.
