La Mesa Neighborhs Oppose Alcohol Outlet

South La Mesa neighborhood opposes new 7-eleven to reduce crime activity in the neighborhood.

Our South La Mesa neighborhood is concerned about a proposed 7-Eleven at 4200 Spring St. This commmunity has experienced an increase in vandalism and criminal activity. An alcohol outlet will allow this trend to continue.  The following are some of the reasons why our neighboord opposes a new 7-Eleven in our community. What is your opinion?

-The proposed location is highly visible, which will attract more people, more crime, increased loitering, and alcohol and cigarette consumption in the vicinity. This business will impact residents on our neighborhood, some of whom reside within 100 feet of this location. A 7-Eleven (or a similar store) will further expose children to alcohol and tobacco products in our neighborhood. The increase of vandalism and crime in our community is already forcing us to restrict our children’s outdoor activities.

-A 7-Eleven that just closed across the street from this location was robbed 4 times in the last 7 months. This 7-Eleven was not only the most robbed 7-Eleven in La Mesa, but also the most robbed business, as listed by the City of La Mesa Police Dept. press releases (http://www.cityoflamesa.com/Archive.aspx?AMID=43&Type=&ADID=).  The robbers disappeared in nearby streets. Needless to say neighbors are happy this 7-Eleven is gone.

-There is an elementary school (TLC Elementary), a church (La Mesa Adventist), and a high school (Liberty High) across the street from this location. The increased traffic, traffic accidents, and potential drunk driving will affect parents and children driving or walking to/from these locations. Also, any burglars may attempt to hide near or in these locations.

-A business such as the proposed 7-Eleven will add absolutely no value to our community. Some of the consequences to neighborhoods have been well studied; the result is the spread of violent crime to nearby communities and affects schools. There is already a liquor store less than 600 ft. from this location.
