Two La Mesa Little League Teams Battle for Baseball Championship

The La Mesa National Blackhawks won the District 33 Little League Minors championship after a well matched game against the Lake Murray Brewers.

During a previous District TOC (Tournament of Champions) game, the Brewers had defeated the Blackhawks, who then had to fight their way back during single elimination play.  While the Brewers appeared to nearly coast to the final game, the Blackhawks played a tight semi final game against Serra Mesa with strong pitching from Cooper Hovey helping to secure a 2-1 victory for La Mesa and gaining them a spot in the final game for the championship.

Playing at the Chollas Lake fields, the Blackhawks started strong, securing two runs in the first inning.  Lake Murray came back fiercely though, and soon took a slim lead over La Mesa.

Strong defense kept the game competitive with pitcher/shortstop Chaz McRoberts securing three pitcher to first base outs in a row during the 4th inning.

At the top of the 6th inning, the Blackhawks trailed by two runs.  The batters stepped up to the challenge and first evened the score and then brought in two more to re-take the lead.  The Brewers attempted to rally, but continued solid pitching and well played defense held back Lake Murray to give La Mesa the win with a final score of 9-7.

Both teams showed sportsmanship with mutual high fives after the game and applause for and from both sides.  La Mesa was presented with a championship banner and the team took it for a victory lap around the field.

Blackhawks manager Charlie McRoberts had high praise for his team, stating; “It has been a true honor to manage this tenacious Blackhawk team of 12 fine young men, two of which have never played baseball before. The life lessons of ‘work hard’ and ‘never give up’ have never been more relevant than they were this season. The lads taught me more than I them, what a privilege for me to be a part of something so special and well deserved.”
