Murdock Elementary Families Support Reading and Local Businesses

The event raised over $500, and Murdock PTA's Tania Doggett noted: "This was the perfect way to support children's reading while also helping our local businesses."

A cold and rainy evening didn’t deter Glenn E. Murdock Elementary students and families from participating in a PTA sponsored dine and shop event at local La Mesa businesses.  Readers Inc. children’s bookstore, The Yogurt Mill and Swami’s Cafe donated a portion of their nights sales back to support educational enrichment programs at Murdock Elementary.

Murdock teachers and the principal took turns reading their favorite stories in a comfy living room like area in Readers Inc.  Children and parents alike browsed a diverse selection of titles while also observing the resident Gekko lizards, turtles, and a toy train which circled the interior of the store.

Many families enjoyed dinner or dessert at Swami’s or The Yogurt Mill before or after their book shopping.

Readers Inc. owner Deena While commented: “I love partnering with schools.  Helping with school site book fairs is what ultimately led me to open Readers Inc.”

The event raised over $500 for the school, and Murdock PTA Book Fair Coordinator Tania Doggett noted: “This was the perfect way to support children’s reading while also helping our local businesses.”
