La Mesa National Little League Prepares for Super Season

The San Diego Padres offered to fund all Minors level uniforms this season if the Minors teams were all in Padres uniforms from various eras.

Excitement was in the air as the La Mesa National Little League held its annual CAP night events at La Mesa Middle School.  Over two consecutive nights, T-Ball, CAPS (Coach Pitch), Minors and Majors teams enjoyed pizza and cupcakes while engaging in a spirited bidding war for the privilege of choosing from a variety of Major League Baseball team caps (the associated uniforms will arrive later).

This is a very important fundraising event for the league, but the bidding was all in the spirit of fun with rival coaches gently teasing each other while the kids cheered for their team choice.

The classic 1970s brown and yellow and two white and blue styles from the 1990s rounded out the selections.  As might be expected, the 2011 World Series champions, the St. Louis Cardinals, were a favorite among the Majors players.  According to President Joe Lutz, over $7,400 was raised for the league.

Another annual tradition, maybe not quite as exciting but equally important, took place last Sunday.  Coaches, league board members, parents, and even kids came out to Kuhlken Field on Memorial Drive and the fields at Lemon Avenue Elementary to prepare them for practices and then the start of the 2012 season.

While some parents replaced home plate on the CAPS field, others put up the Minors field fence, smoothed infield dirt, or trimmed grass at Kuhlken.

Joe Lutz summed the recent events up nicely: “Two of the most important preseason activities for La Mesa National Little League were a rousing success.  Cap Night, our largest fundraiser, created quite a BUZZ with the kids and we raised a great sum to fund league needs.  Field Work day was fantastic once again and the fields have never been in better shape this early in the year!”

Coaches and players put the fields to good use on the following Monday with teams practicing hard to ready themselves for opening day and the start of another great season.
