Community Contributes To Support School Volunteer

The Lemon Grove Moose Lodge is hosting a special fundraiser for La Mesa Spring Valley School District volunteer extraordinaire Christina Hicks on Saturday, August 18.

Mrs. Hicks has been a long time volunteer superstar for children and parents from schools across the La Mesa Spring Valley School District.  She has held a variety of PTA positions at the unit, council, and district level and has been an active classroom and school activity helper.  Mt. Helix Council of PTA’s president, Beth Bacting, said “Christina has the biggest heart I have ever seen.”

Living in the south Spring Valley area, Christina saw firsthand the basic day to day needs many families face.  Her response was to found CASA (Community and Student Assistance) a program that she describes as a “One stop shop” for basic need resources and service referrals.

CASA is located at Kempton Elementary and has everything from basic food staples to clothing to diapers.  Any common household supply is likely to be in stock and social service information and referrals can also be made.  Christina has indicated that with the difficult economy, CASA is now serving students and families from every school in the La Mesa Spring Valley district.

Unfortunately Christina, a wife, mother of two, and caregiver for her own mother, was faced with her own personal challenge when she was diagnosed with cancer.  She has endured a long and difficult path of treatment, but never stopped her volunteering, giving her time to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in addition to school duties.

The Lemon Grove Moose Lodge holds an annual cancer patient fundraiser each year called Mama’s Gift, and this year they are supporting Christina Hicks to help her family with the medical costs of her treatment.

The event will be held on Saturday, August 18 at 9062 Memory Lane in Spring Valley.  There will be food, games, music, and a raffle.  The event is for age 21 and older.  Tickets are $25 and additional information can be obtained from Christ Welch at 619-466-8820 or Bob Godsil 619-465-1820.
