Despite a steady decline in trash production since 2004, San Diego County disposed of more trash than any other metropolitan area in California in 2012, according to data released recently by the sustainability and quality of life nonprofit Equinox Center.
The average San Diego County resident produces 5 pounds of trash per day while the average Californian produces 4.32 pounds a day.
But with an average of 2.86 pounds of trash produced per day, La Mesa is one of the least trashy cities in San Diego County, second only to Imperial Beach's 2.84 pounds for the least trash produced per day.
La Mesa also saw the fourth largest decline in trash production in 2012.
Residents of San Diego's trashiest city Del Mar produce 11.4 pounds of trash per day last year.
