Wise Talk: Chargers Need Chip Kelly

A word of advice to the San Diego Chargers.

A word of advice to the Chargers: set up an interview immediately with Chip Kelly, the coach at Oregon.

Sports Illustrated reported yesterday that Cleveland has set up an interview with him for Friday. He would probably prefer to stay on the west coast; thus making the Chargers his first choice.

I know the Chargers want to hire a GM first, and I know that traditionally college coaches do very poorly in the NFL, but this time they must get in line immediately.

Chip Kelly took an average team and put them in the top five every year since he's been at Oregon. Furthermore, his great team had the stars graduate, and he plugged new players into those positions and they kept winning.

As to college coaches going to the NFL: Lou Holst, Pete Carroll, and many others have gone to the NFL after significant success as college coaches, but few have produced the results that Chip Kelly has.

There is no need to commit to hiring him, certainly not until others have been interviewed, but the Chargers definitely need to get in line.
