World Record at Grossmont, La Mesa's SWAT Vehicle and Hoops All-Stars

At La Mesa-Mount Helix Patch, we know that in your busy lives there may be some stories that you can't read about the day they happen. With the "Week That Was" column, we'll provide a roundup of the most important stories of the week.

After what was undoubtedly a nervous and scary night for his mother, a Grossmont High School student was found safely Wednesday morning, after not arriving at the South County trolley stop to meet his mother. He was reported missing on Tuesday night.

It was announced last week that popular, and often controversial, conservative political pundit Glenn Beck will speak at two gatherings at Skyline Church in Rancho San Diego on Sunday, April 22. More than 3,000 people are expected to attend.

The La Mesa City Council last week voted on several measures, including the approval of a SWAT-style armored tactical vehicle, known as a BearCat. The vehicle will be purchased with funds from a federal grant.

Former San Diego mayor candidate Rich Riel is plunging ahead with his lawsuit against the La Mesa Police Department. On Wednesday, Riel’s case of alleged police brutality against former Chief Al Lanning and four officers saw two procedural hearings scheduled—one for June 15 and another July 13, according to court records.

It was a tale of the yen and the yang at Grossmont College last week. While the institution was in the in the midst of preparing for its 50th anniversary celebration, a 21-year-old man was found dead in a car parked at the school. Pending notification of his family, his identity is still unknown.

On Saturday, at the school's Open House celebration, they set a Guiness World Record for the most people to sign a birthday card, as 1,797 people signed a giant birthday card, which wished the school a happy 50th. The previous record was 1,468.

This weekend in Iowa, family and friends will pay their final to Wilma Groh, a Spring Valley resident who died in March. Groh founded the Wil-Mat Project, a group of people who used recycled plastic bags to weave into mats to give to homeless people. The project will continue in Wilma's honor, as will their weekly meetings at Cali Comfort Restaurant and Sports Bar.
