Whooping Cough Vaccine Now Available Across County

Here's a roundup of news from San Diego County last week:

A vaccine for pertussis, or “whooping cough,” is available at the County’s six public health centers and one vaccination clinic for residents with no medical insurance at low cost.  Beginning July 1, guardians of students in 7th through 12th grade will have to show proof their children have received the booster shot required for school attendance.

On Friday May 27, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advised consumers to stop using pool and spa drain covers from 8 manufacturers due to incorrect ratings. More information on this recall can be found on the CPSC website.

Yet another dog was reunited with its owner due to a microchip the size of a grain of rice on Tuesday. County shelters scan all stray animals for a microchip and luckily “Paddy,” the 4-year-old Terrier, had one. All three County animal shelters offer microchips every Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m.

A passenger on United Airlines flight #0521 was confirmed Thursday to having measles, a highly contagious disease. Passengers on the May 27 flight from Chicago to San Diego are warned about exposure.

Dr. Mike Moreno, author of the bestseller The 17-Day Diet and former guest on the show Dr. Phil, will host a free weight loss workshop at the Rancho San Diego Library Saturday, June 18 at 1 p.m. He will share approaches for weight loss reduction in adults.
