Too Broke for Spring Break? La Mesa Is Your Vacation Destination!

Sights and amusements around the area make you a tourist in your own back yard.

Not everyone can jet off to Cancun for spring break, or even take a week off work to laze around the house.  For a cost- and time-effective alternative, try these bite-size spring break ideas.

Yosemite might be majestic, but the Kumeyaay Lake Campground at Mission Trails Park is a more manageable weekend trip.  Tents and RVs are welcome at only $20 a campsite—including a fire pit, so don’t forget the marshmallows!—although the sweeping mountain views and fresh spring greenery are free of charge.  If you plan on camping, plan to come early; the sites are only available Friday and Saturday nights, and on a first come-first serve basis.

Instead of a deep-sea fishing trip off Baja, take a Sunday morning fly-fishing lesson at Lake Murray.  Sure, you won’t experience the thrill of angling a massive ocean catch, but you’ll still be able to enjoy the warm outdoor breeze and the serenity of watching sunlight shimmer in the open water.  Not only are the lessons free, but equipment is available for use at no charge on a first come-first serve basis.

The Smithsonian in Washington is a treasure to anyone fascinated with history, but what history is more relevant to your everyday life than the history of La Mesa?  The area has changed much from its earliest days, a transition chronicled lovingly by the La Mesa Historical Society for decades.  The McKinney House and Museum is open 1 to 4 p.m. the first and third Saturday of every month, so why not spend an afternoon delving into your neighborhood’s past?

Napa Valley is so famous for its wine, it’s had movies made about it.  San Pasqual, on the other hand, has not quite reached international celebrity status, but it’s certainly a star in La Mesa’s Village.  Every Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., the San Pasqual Winery hosts a wine tasting featuring a delightful mix of reds and whites.  The $8.50 tasting fee includes a souvenir glass and discounts on bottle purchases—a reasonable price to pay for a taste of sophistication.
