The False Gun Scare At Helix High, 'The Water Lady' and Chaldean Hoops

At Mount Helix Patch, we know that in your busy lives–especially during the holidays–there may be some stories that you can't read about the day they happen. With the "Week That Was" column, we'll provide a roundup of the most important stories of the week.

Did you miss the Grossmont-Mt. Helix Improvement Association's "Walk Up Mt. Helix" community event last weekend? If so, check out the photo gallery, with some great shots of some of the neighborhood's favorite canine companions. Photos were taken by Claire Rule.

The community lost one of its own earlier this month, with the death of Shirley Massie. Known simply as "the Water Lady," Massie was instrumental in forming water conservation education programs in local schools.

A Grossmont High School student, Kelsie Horeth, got a chance to sing a song she wrote herself at halftime of the boys basketball game last week. The kicker? It was also being filmed by MTV for its show called "Made," which helps teens achieve their dreams. Kelsie wants to be a pop singer, and this could be her ticket to fame. At least 15 minutes worth anyway.

Tensions and fears abounded on Friday, when police responded to Helix High School after (what turned out to be false) reports of a shooting that was going to take place on campus. It was widely reported that the school was placed on lock down, but later that status was lessened to "secure campus." Here the story from the students' perspective with this video:

It might seem like just your standard basketball games to the unenlightened, but for those in East County's Chaldean community, Wednesday nights at the YMCA have become the place to be. Check out the story of this unique basketball league, and its importance for players and spectators alike.
