A weekend motorcycle crash injured San Miguel Fire Chief Augie Ghio, sending him to the hospital, where he is in stable condition. Ghio was days away from retiring after 6 years of service in San Miguel, and more than 30 years in fire service.

(Correction Note: It was previously reported that Ghio was riding with District board president Chris Winter. Winter was not present. Ghio's time of service with San Miguel was also previously misrepresented. La Mesa-Mount Helix Patch apologizes for the inaccuracy.)

The La Mesa City Council heard staff presentations on what measures the city has taken, and what accomplishments it has earned, in relation to being more eco-friendly. The presentation outlined 12 different categories that the city is making strides, including increased walkability, fuel and energy efficiency for city-owned vehicles, increased recycling efforts, and more.

Helix Charter High School earned a spot on the list of the nation's top high schools, according to a recent survey in U.S. News & World Report. Helix was rated 1,328th nationally and 277th in the state of California. The only other GUHSD high school to be rated on the list was Valhalla, at 295th in the state.

Ceremonies and tributes continued for former San Diego Chargers legend Junior Seau, who was found dead in his Oceanside home on Wednesday, May 2, after reportedly shooting himself in the chest. A private ceremony was held for close family and friends, and a public tribute was held on Friday night at Qualcomm Stadium, where many locals gathered to pay tribute.
