Power Outage Tales, a 9/11 Tribute, and 'School House Rocks!'

See these and other stories as we take a look at the week in review.

At Mount Helix Patch, we know that in your busy lives there may be some stories that you can't read about the day they happen. With the "Week That Was" column, we'll provide a roundup of the most important stories of the week.

Obviously, the blackout in San Diego County dominated most of the chatter on Thursday and over the weekend. Patch was all over the story, posting updates as they came in.

Eventually, after being out from anywhere from 9-12 hours, power was restored to Mount Helix, Spring Valley and the rest of the county.

While some stayed at home during the blackout, others enjoyed cold beer and NFL football at Cali Comfort, as the restaurant was operating on a backup generator.

Mount Helix Patch hit the streets on Friday asking residents what they did during the blackout. Most spent time with friends and families and enjoyed "shutting off" for a few hours.

In addition to the power outage, the other important story of the week was the buildup to the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Spring Valley resident Mitch Mendel started the Patriot Flag project to fly a giant American flag in 50 states in 50 weeks, including in New York City on Sunday. The flag was flown in Rancho San Diego Tuesday before it left for the East Coast.

The latest in the Young Actors' Theatre's productions is "School House Rock Live!" and Angela Luevano was able to go behind the scenes. The show opened on Friday and runs through this weekend.

The controversial El Monte Valley Wastewater Reclamation project is being shelved by Helix Water District, due to rising costs.

With schools starting recently, it's important that parents know whom to contact at their child's school, whether it be the principal or vice principal, counselor, psychologist or nurse. Mount Helix Patch compiled a list of all Spring Valley schools.

Monte Vista fell to 0-2 on the young season, as their offense had its own "power outage" in a 35-7 loss to Del Norte.
