The man who died in a Spring Valley apartment fire, which temporarily displaced more than 100 residents in the early morning hours of Oct. 14, was identified as Hunter Cross, 65, and ex-Navy man.

Time for a little bit of boasting, as Patch.com sites in San Diego took home 18 awards at the 38th annual San Diego Press Club Awards last Tuesday. La Mesa Patch, Carlsbad Patch, and Poway Patch were each individually honored.

Led by the efforts of a big play wide receiver who transferred in, the Matadors beat Santana on Friday and took control of the Grossmont Valley League.

This story is a little out of the Mount Helix Patch coverage area, but it's still close, and very sad. The cab driver who was shot and killed last Sunday in Lemon Grove has been identified as Jalaludin Hamrah, 39.
