Morning Rain, Then Afternoon Heat '1-2 Punch' County

Observed conditions for Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, from La Mesa Mesonet station. Forecast data from National Weather Service.

Though far from approaching any established local record for heat or precipitation, Tuesday morning’s light rain made for an unusual September event and caused traffic delays throughout the county. By midafternoon, prevailing winds had shifted, creating clear skies and sharply elevated temperatures, both of which are expected for a repeat performance both Wednesday and Thursday.

Wednesday forecast: Sunny with a daytime high near 92. Calm wind becoming west between 5 and 10 mph. Mostly clear overnight with a low around 66. Northwest wind between 5 and 10 mph becoming calm.

Thursday forecast: Sunny with a daytime high near 90. Calm wind becoming west between 5 and 10 mph. Mostly clear overnight with areas of late patchy fog and a low around 63. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm.

Extended forecast: Early morning patchy fog Friday, then sunny with a daytime high near 79 and an overnight low around 60 with increasing cloudiness and late patchy fog. Early morning clouds and patchy fog Saturday, then gradual clearing with a daytime high near 76 and an overnight low around 60 with increasing cloudiness and late patchy fog.

Tuesday conditions: Morning clouds and light rain clearing by early afternoon with a daytime high of 99. Wind mainly from the east early, then shifting from the northwest mid afternoon between 5 and 15 mph. Mostly clear overnight with a low around 68. West wind between 5 and 10 mph becoming calm.
