Local 'Obamacare' Reaction, Runaway Vehicle Kills Veteran, and Fireworks Flameout

At La Mesa-Mount Helix Patch, we know that in your busy lives there may be some stories that you can't read about the day they happen. With the "Week That Was" column, we'll provide a roundup of the most important stories of the week.

A tragic story leads off our Week That Was column. On Tuesday, an unoccupied runaway vehicle crashed into an elder care facilty in La Mesa. An 89-year-old man was injured in the crash, and he ultimately died later from internal head injuries. He was identified as Henry Hashiguchi.

College Prep Middle School, which operates out of the La Mesa Church of Christ on Jackson Drive, will be able to add a 5th grade and increase its enrollment next year, the La Mesa City Council decided Tuesday. Find out why it was a controversial decision.

With Independence Day approaching, La Mesans will have to travel outside city limits to see fireworks this year, after the Lake Murray festivities were canceled due to the threat of litigation from CERF. Below is also a list of where you can go see fireworks around the county.

A pickup truck was completely engulfed in flames and destroyed in the parking lot at Grossmont Center last week. One faithful Patch reader was on hand and took a terrific photo gallery of the event.
