Helix's Bill Walton Continues to Dominate Competition

According to the Spring Valley Bulletin, here's what was happening in Spring Valley this week in 1970:

– Helix High School's 7-foot basketball phenom, Bill Walton, continued to dominate the competition in the Grossmont league, helping the Scotties maintain their undefeated 23-0 record. Walton finished iwth 26 points and 29 rebounds in Helix's most recent win against Monte Vista. Walton's crisp outlet passes allowed Helix to run all over the Monarchs, en route to a 94-51 win. Mike Dupree was raining jumpers from the outside, finishing with 26 points himself. Earlier in the week, the Scotties took down Santana (who was in second place) by a score of 81-47. Walton led the way again with monster night: 32 points, 21 rebounds and 8 blocked shots.

– Clovis Hill, a journalism teacher at Helix High School, was chosen as the California High School Journalism Teacher of the Year, by the California Newspapers and Publications Association. The award is given annually to the teacher who makes the greatest contribution to teaching journalism. Hill attended the presentation at the L.A. Century Plaza Hotel. The three-day event featured talks by Vice President Spiro Agnew and California Governor Ronald Reagan. Hill has taught at Helix for 17 years. During his tenure, his students have won sweepstakes awards in 12 of those years.  He is married, and has four kids who attend Mount Miguel High School.

– There's a new butcher in town, and hang on ladies, he's a bachelor! Al Berkey has joined with his brother-in-law Vince Provinzano at his Italian bakery and deli. Berkey has been in the meat industry for 36 years, serving as a butcher and cook. He gave up a successful butcher shop in Eau Claire, Wisc. to join Provinzano. Berkey is promising prices lower than the supermarket, and will make his own sausages, including: Italian, Polish and Hungarian.
