Grossmont High School Arts Program Honored with 'Exemplary Award'

Grossmont is the only high school in San Diego County to win the award, and one of only 13 across California.

Grossmont High School was recently honored by the California Department of Education with an Exemplary Award, which recognizes efforts to promote the arts or physical education.

Grossmont is the only high school in San Diego County to win the award, and one of only 13 across California.

The school was honored for its illustrious arts program, which features 16 arts courses, five dance classes, 11 music classes, four theater (including technical theater) courses and four media arts courses, according to U-T San Diego.

"We are very proud to be a twice-honored California Distinguished School and the most recent award distinguishes Grossmont High School for its Exemplary Arts program," Barnes told the newspaper.

The award was given following a visit to the school from educators from around San Diego County, who observed the programs first-hand and made a recommendation for the approval of the award by the state superintendent.

Grossmont's new $16.7 million performing arts center, paid for with Prop U funds, is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2013.
