A San Diego Sheriff's sergeant shot and killed a man at a Descanso rest stop last week. The man who was shot was the suspect in a fatal stabbing case.

John Smith, a Spring Valley resident who died on Jan. 30 in his home, was the first person buried in a casket at Miramar National Cemetery last week. Smith was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, and was influential in founding the Veterans Village in San Diego, as well as starting the annual "Stand Down" event, which aids homeless veterans. Smith was 62.
