With gas prices being so high, you want to make sure you are getting what you pay for at the pump. More than 36 gas stations, including one in Spring Valley, were recently assessed fines for poor pump performance or inaccuracies.

A San Diego Sheriff's sergeant shot and killed a man at a Descanso rest stop last week. The man who was shot was the suspect in a fatal stabbing case.

Seniors Jazmen Hilbert and Clarissa Leon (Monte Vista HS) and Geraldine Cabreros and Melissa Meneses (Mount Miguel HS) were recently awarded scholarships from the Grossmont Healthcare District.

John Smith, a Spring Valley resident who died on Jan. 30 in his home, was the first person buried in a casket at Miramar National Cemetery last week. Smith was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, and was influential in founding the Veterans Village in San Diego, as well as starting the annual "Stand Down" event, which aids homeless veterans. Smith was 62.
