Extra Police Officers to Patrol La Mesa for July 4

La Mesa law enforcement will target drunk drivers on Fourth of July holiday.

La Mesa Police Department Press Release

The La Mesa Police Department will have extra officers on patrol that are specifically looking for drunk drivers on Thursday, July 4 during the popular Independence Day celebrations.  As part of working together with other San Diego County law enforcement agencies and the San Diego County “AVOID the DUI” campaign, several additional La Mesa Police Officers will be conducting DUI saturation patrols.  This is being done as part of our on-going efforts to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes, as well as to educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving.

In California, this deadly crime led to 774 deaths in 2010 because someone failed to designate a sober driver.  After falling dramatically for five straight years, figures for 2011 and 2012 indicate that DUI deaths remained the same as 2010.

DUI can impact the economy in addition to the pain and suffering of those immediately affected.

Conservatively, a fatality has a $1.4 million impact, an injury $70,000, and a crash that only damages property averages nearly $9000.

Funding for this operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
