Coach Calls It Quits, a Walmart Stabbing, and Sexual Harassment Arrest

These stories and more as we take a look at the Week in Review on La Mesa-Mount Helix Patch.

At La Mesa-Mount Helix Patch, we know that in your busy lives there may be some stories that you can't read about the day they happen. With the "Week That Was" column, we'll provide a roundup of the most important stories of the week.

The end of the week brought a few big stories to the area. We start with the sudden resignation of Grossmont head baseball coach Jim Earley, which was announced Friday. The coach's leaving comes on the heels of one of the worst seasons in the school's history, which saw the Foothillers lose their final 20 games.

Another wrinkle to this story is the series of allegations against Earley of misappropriation of funds and other wrongdoings, which were made by the parent of a former star player. The district has begun an investigation on the allegations, but has yet to find any wrongdoing at this point.

A Walmart employee was stabbed while trying to prevent a teenager from stealing merchandise. The assailant was caught by police, arrested, and booked into county jail on a variety of charges. Police also said that the teen was possibly deaf.

When Gov. Jerry Brown released his "revised budget" last week, fears of a giant defecit in school funding were confirmed, which makes Brown's tax initiative on the November ballot vital. Despite this, district Superintendent Brian Marshall said that they are not considering any layoffs. Which lead to one of our poll questions for the week.

A La Mesa man, Daniel Hubbard, 52, was arrested in connection with a recent spate of sexual and verbal harassment against female high school students. Police said that they believe Hubbard drove up on at least three girls while they walked to school  last week, even going so far as to pull over his vehicle, and grab one of the girls by the arm.

The latest production at the Young Actors' Theatre is going on now! There's still time to see "Annie," which stars a La Mesa youngster as the loveable orphan.
