Apartment Fire, Matadors Dominate Rivals, and Grossmont High Wants New Tennis Courts

At Mount Helix Patch, we know that in your busy lives there may be some stories that you can't read about the day they happen. With the "Week That Was" column, we'll provide a roundup of the most important stories of the week.

A 16-month-old child died after the infant was found floating in a backyard swimming pool in Spring Valley. The child was rushed to the hospital, but attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful.

Several public education bills were signed by Governor Jerry Brown last week, in an attempt to help remedy some of the problems it faces. Many of the bills were authored by Assemblyman Marty Block, who represents Spring Valley and Lemon Grove. Block wrote about his bills and how they might affect students.

At a school board meeting this week, members of the Grossmont High tennis team argued that they are not being treated fairly, and that they deserve to have new courts installed, so that they don't have to travel for every match, even those which are hailed as "home" games.

A fire broke out at a Spring Valley apartment complex in the early morning hours Friday, displacing hundreds of residents and killing one man. The fire and the cause of the man's death are still under investigation. The fire occurred at Rancho Point Apartment Homes, on Sweetwater Springs Boulevard, just south of SR-94.

The cross-town rivalry between Monte Vista and Mount Miguel has been dominated by the Matadors in recent year. That trend continued, as they blanked the Monarchs 56-0, behind a strong effort from star running back Derrick Dunn.
