And the Nominees Are: Vote for Best Burger in East County

As part of Patch's Readers' Choice 2012, we asked for your nominations for the Best Burger in La Mesa, Lemon Grove and Santee. Now's your chance to vote.

Bacon kinda gets all the attention, but the burger craze has been upon us for a while too.

Kobe burgers. Artisan buns. Homemade ketchup. Or hey, just a regular burger. Are you a burger classicist or a foodie who wants to see how far the definition of a burger can be stretched?

Whichever way you go, please vote for the best burger in town, whether it qualifies as the traditional patty on a bun or as a flavorful re-invention of the old favorite.

You already told us some of your favorites during the nomination period, and now we've put them into a poll  — ready for you to vote to help us determine the local favorite.

The deadline to vote is Friday, Aug. 17. Votes for "other" must be accompanied by a specification in the comments section in order to count. Here are the nominations:

(La Mesa)

(Santee)

Beef ‘n’ Bun Whistle Stop (El Cajon)

Steers Burgers & Fries (Lakeside)

(Santee)

(La Mesa)

(Santee)

Weevil Burger on Dallas Street in La Mesa. Best burger in town with the best service in town!
Lemongrovelocal July 23, 2012 at 03:35 PM
My pick is Fred's in El Cajon or Alpine...the best and inexpensive. None of this $10 a burger stuff like these new facny joints. Less that $7 for a combo unless you get the goliath burger. And their milkshakes rock!
Steve Dolan July 23, 2012 at 03:40 PM
The best burgers are at Fred's Old Fashioned Burgers in Alpine and on Second Street in El Cajon. Fred's does not have the publicity machine; it just has the best burgers you will find in San Diego County.
Bianca July 23, 2012 at 04:38 PM
eastbound 1000000% better. Johnny B's would be my 2nd choice!
Craig Maxwell July 23, 2012 at 05:05 PM
Fred's burgers are also good--much like Beef 'n Buns. But both (like Johnny B's) use frozen patties. That, for me, automatically takes them out of the top tier.
Craig Maxwell July 23, 2012 at 05:23 PM
Oh, and by the way; the Descanso Junction Restaurant also serves a well-above-average burger.
Monica July 23, 2012 at 06:02 PM
Johnny B's is fantastic, can't wait until football season to enjoy a game there!
Jenny Skeen July 23, 2012 at 06:44 PM
Gingham is awesome! The burger was the best I've ever had. So excited to have this restaurant (and a top tier chef as the founder) in La Mesa. So many great food options locally.
Norma Brinker July 23, 2012 at 07:21 PM
Denny's western burger is the best burger I've ever had.

Although not technically in La Mesa, Terra on El Cajon Blvd has an AWESOME Terra Burger. And the Bistro Burger at Vine Cottage on Lake Murray Blvd is worth consideration, especially on Thursday evenings when it is "Burger & Beer" night.

Fred's Old Fashioned Burgers in Alpine and on Second Street in El Cajon has been the best I have had. They also have great onion rings and milkshakes and they have great service.

Fred's in El Cajon or Alpine!! Best everything!

It's been ages since I've been there ... and now I can't stop thinking about it. Road trip!

Dont forget Charley burger right here in Lemon Grove. Double bacon burger exta sauce and a vanilla shake cannot be beat. Like a trip back to a better time
Lemongrovelocal July 24, 2012 at 01:35 AM
Christine, they recently opened a Fred's in Chula Vista. I'm hoping with all this development in Lemon Grove, Fred's would open a location here! Would save me some gas money. I might even be able to walk there (might help burn a few calories!)

My family enjoys Budde's Burgers on the NW corner of Montezuma & College Ave. Yumm!!!
Sally Reynolds July 24, 2012 at 03:39 AM
TERRA gets my vote ! Awesome !
Mark Robak July 24, 2012 at 05:00 AM
That's a good point about Johnny's B's having frozen patties, but they are quite good and a consistent product for many years. Judging by what other people have said, I need to try Fred's though!
The Regal Bar July 24, 2012 at 06:21 AM
Johnny B's is the way to go. Great burgers! Good folks!
Lemongrovelocal July 24, 2012 at 01:38 PM
The problem with Johnny B's is that it is a bar and if you want to have a family meal you can't because people under 21 aren't allowed.
Larry Stone July 24, 2012 at 01:53 PM
That is the nice thing about Savanna Grill, there is a big outdoor patio overlooking Cottonwood Golf Course and kids are welcome. The burger quality is top notch.
Beavis July 24, 2012 at 06:45 PM
My go to place has always been Fuddrucker's. I love the fresh baked buns and the fact that I can top the burger with whatever I want.
Scott Alevy July 25, 2012 at 05:31 AM
Not sure who compiled this poll, but you are missing some great cheese burgers. Several of the varieties at both of the Hooley's Pub locations (Grossmont Center and Rancho San Diego). Eastbound in Lakeside. Mary Etta's on Old Highway 80 in Flynn Springs. The Charcoal House in La Mesa, with a hard to beat $4.99 special daily before 2pm. The Junction on Jamacha, with a $5.99 daily special. The Brig Burger at the Brigantine. You might want to start over with a more complete list.

Eastbound Bar & Grill in Lakeside best burger in all of San Diego!!!

Great place for burgers and brew....and more. Loved the steak and eggs I had for brunch last week. My wife had an awesome bacon burger! It was our first visit with friends, we'll definitely be going back.

In my opinion things that New Yorkers tend to be most idolized for when it comes to fashion is actually their fearlessness, their “dare to become different” mindset, and the idea that bolder is definitely better. http://www.pursesandhandbagsguide.com

The right time in order to send a marriage gift can vary by area and traditions from the wedding party you've been asked to. Nevertheless, by knowing the correct rules associated with etiquette, and asking a few pre-determined questions, you can certainly determine the optimum time to send a marriage gift towards the happy few. http://www.bestonlineweddinggifts.com

Among the hallmarks of numerous different cuisines is actually fried meals. But along with modern medicine's increased exposure of more heart-healthy foods, frying meals in oil might be questionable. http://www.cookingideas.eu

Can we now have the Perform Live facility because they do within schools? It's a lot fun the children don't realise just how much they tend to be learning as well as improving their own mental maths abilities. http://www.earlyyearseducation.eu
