– San Diego Police Chief Bill Kolender was named an "Honorary Chairperson" for the (now politically incorrect) 1982 Retarded Citizens Telethon. Kolender was named because he has taken an active role in many of the organizations civic and social functions. The purpose of the telethon is "to promote public awareness of the ARC-SD, the abilities of the retarded, and how the citizens of San Diego County can help through understanding and acceptance, as well as to generate capital improvement funds."
