The 1963 Chargers’ championship team played in the golf tournament alongside other NFL greats as well. The banquet and auction was held at the Town and Country Hotel in Mission Valley and all San Diegans were invited to attend. Tax deductible tickets cost $50 each. The evening featured a gourmet dinner, surprise guests and Ronald McDonald himself.

The golf tournament was held the following day at Singing Hills Golf Course in El Cajon and was kicked off by a morning brunch. Attendees who wanted to play in the tournament had the opportunity to be paired up with an NFL great or 1963 Charger champion player. – The March of Dimes held a “Great Gatsby Gala” to raise money for the organization, dedicated to fighting birth defects in infants and babies. The event was held in the Gaslamp Quarter of Downtown San Diego June 17. Local radio personalities Jon Michael Kay and Kathy Aunan of B100 radio were the co-hosts of the event. The evening brought out ladies dressed as flappers and men dressed in classic three piece suits and bowler hats. Guests enjoyed craps tables, costume contests and live music. The San Diego Chapter of the Horseless Carriage Club put on a display of antique cars and members of the San Diego Chargers made an appearance as well. All money raised at the event directly supported The March of Dimes organization.

– Local residents were warned to use mulch instead of pesticides to beat those pesky summer-time weeds. Mulch was said to help stop weeds from growing by blocking the life-giving sunlight that weeds, like other plants, need to survive. Mulches were also said to help conserve water in the soil and guard smaller plants from overheating. A variety of mulches were available for purchase and gardeners didn’t have to worry about the health of their plants and flowers. Almost all plants were reported to benefit from being mulched, particularly Hibiscus and other tropical plants. Even vegetable gardens are safe to be mulched—a healthier alternative to dangerous pesticide.
