1972: Christmas Lighting Contest Winners Announced in Spring Valley and Lemon Grove

Here's a look at what was happening in your neighborhood, this week in 1972.

According to the Spring Valley Bulletin, here's what was happening in the Spring Valley area, this week in 1972:

 

– A Spring Valley man and his family have returned from a five-year civil service tour of the Phillippines. Maurice "Bernie" Becker finished up service as an accounting officer in charge of construction. He formerly served with the San Diego Navy PUblic Works Center, and was promoted to Comptroller Administrative Officer. Becker's son David was one of the most popular DJs on the isand, and had his own radio show. Becker's daughter Karen was a member of the Ford Racing Team in the Phillippines.

– The results are in the Christmas lighting contest for the Lemon Grove/Spring Valley Chambers, with Mr. and Mrs. John Emerick earning the top honors in Lemon Grove. Mr. John Bertino was the winner in Spring Valley for his decorations on Olive Road. There were 36 participants in all, withseveral winning honors, including: Tommie Hamilton, Richard Grogget, Margaret Ann Boschia, Frank Palmer, Albert Calamors and Richard Chapman.

– Mrs. Nadia Davies 225 foreign language students led Mount Miguel High School students in "playing Santa" for a group of kids  in the cmmunity. The high schoolers handed out bags of candy and gifts. Davies started the project 11 years ago, when she was a teacher at Kimball Elementary School.
