1969: Board to Vote On Undergrounding Power, Phone Lines

According to the Spring Valley Bulletin, here's what was happening in your neighbourhood this week in 1969.

– A public meeting was held at Palm Junior High School to discuss the possibility of undergrounding telephone and electric lines in the Palm area. The proposed project would cost about $130 per household for the conversion, plus the cost of digging a trench, which would cost about $18.50

Per a show of hands for those at the meeting, 27 approved the measure, 10 opposed. The County Board of Supervisors was set to vote on the proposal.

– Joseph Mazer of Lemon Grove celebrated his 96th birthday party at the Monte Vista Lodge. Mazer was born on Aug. 13, 1873 in Russia. He grew up in Philadelphia and attended the University of Pittsburgh. He has lived in East County for the past 21 years. Mazer was still very full of life, and joined with others sipping champagne and leading outbursts of songs.

– Two La Mesa-Spring Valley School District staff members received their doctorate degrees. Thomas C. Vandruff, assistant superintendent, received his doctorate of Philosophy from the Graduate School of Leadership, at the U.S. International University-San Diego. William R. Schell, the director of instructional materials, received his doctorate of Education at UCLA. Schell came to the district in 1949 as a teacher at Spring Valley Elementary. He was named principal at Bancroft Elementary in 1961.
