1968: Happy Mothers Day - Lemon Grove Mom Wins M.S. Mother of the Year

See what was happening in your neighborhood, this week in 1968.

Here's a look at what was happening in and around the Spring Valley community, this week in 1968:

– A Lemon Grove woman was named Multiple Sclerosis Mother of the Year. Mrs. Robert Allen had been living with the disease for more than 25 years and was in the hospital at the time that the announcement was made.

The San Diego Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society made the selection and held a ceremony for Mrs. Allen at Lindbergh Field in conjunction with Pacific Southwest Airline’s announcement that they would offer scenic flights to help raise funds for local MS operations. Mrs. Allen was also honored by the Lemon Grove Women’s Club. PSA announced that on Mother’s Day, May 12 of that year and Father’s Day, June 16, the airline would offer 20-minute flights to anyone who contributed $5 for adults and $2.50 for children. Mrs. Allen said she manages to keep her disease under control while still taking care of her family and enjoying life.

– The Helix Irrigation District awarded a contract to Tab Construction for $915,846 to bring the district’s water lines up to full capacity. The contract called for the company to build three more miles of new transmission lines at the R.M. Levy Water Treatment Plant in Lakeside. The new lines were slated to run from the water treatment plant in Lakeside to the Helix water district via a direct hookup.

The three miles of line were slated to be made of 13,288 feet of 54-inch pipe, 1,945 feet of 42-inch pipe and 147 feet of 36-inch pipe. After the new pipes were added, the plant was able to distribute 50 million gallons of water each day. Before construction the distribution of water each day was only half that.

Southern California First National Bank loaned the large sum of money to the Helix Irrigation District at a rate of 4.08 percent interest each year. The lines were originally supposed to be included in the construction of the Lakeside water treatment plant when it was built in 1965, but were left out due to a lack of funds at the time. Construction was supposed to start 30-60 days after the contract was given to Tab Construction.

– Preschoolers age three through five had a new option to fill their summer time. The Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Spring Valley opened a Vacation Church School session that began May 14 and continued for three weeks.

The two courses that were offered included “Learning to Pray” and “The Story of Jesus.” The preschool classes were held separately from the rest of school because so many children signed up to participate the year before. The two separate sessions allowed each of the two groups to have more space and attention from class instructors. Enrollment forms for either the Summer session for children who had completed Kindergarten, or the Spring session for preschoolers, were available in the church.
