1966: Rabies Situation Across County Still Described As 'Dangerous'

According to the Spring Valley Bulletin, here's what was happening in the Spring Valley area, this week in 1966:

 

– The San Diego County Department of Health has described the rabies situation across the county as "as dangerous now as it was four years ago," when the outbreak first began. Department director J.B. Askew said, "the danger will remain the same until all of the dogs get an updated vaccine." He confirmed that the rabies is spreading through wild animals. There are 119 cases documented across the county since September 1962. Of those, 111 were dogs, and 92 were stray dogs. Askew encouraged those who have been bitten by rabid dogs to wash the wound with soap and water and see a physician immediately.

– The Monte Vista and Mt. Miguel high school bands will be participating in the 21st Annual Mother Goose Parade, as well as the Arcadia Invitational and Review, which offers a $1,700 prize. There are 37 bands participating in the Mother Goose Parade, including the 105-piece USC band. The Grand Marshal is Don Coryell, head coach of the top-ranked San Diego State Aztecs football team. The princess is Mary Fitzgerald, 17, of Helix High School.

– The Mt. Miguel Booster Club has built a fence that will encircle the football field at the school's stadium. As featured in the photo, Ed Schroeder, Booster president; Principal Mel Grant; Maria Norman, club member; and Sally Menard, concession chair were all involved in the fence building. The fence cost $1,800 and the money was raised through concession sales.

 

– A fire which caused $1,300 in damage was started by someone smoking in bed, it was reported. Robert Hurst claims that his friend dropped a lit match onto a pile of papers, starting the fire at Hurst's home on Thunderbird Lane.
