1962: Two Couples Celebrate Their 'Golden' Anniversary

According to the Spring Valley Bulletin, here's what was happening in your neighborhood, this week in 1962:

 

– Two Spring Valley couples, Robert and Frida Gustafson, and Fred and Pearl Harris, both celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this week. The Gustafsons, who are both from Sweden, celebrated with an open house with their friends and relatives. Robert made his living as a carpenter. The couple met in 1910, and were married in 1912.

Fred and Pearl Harris will have an open house on Sept. 30. They met in Palpinto, Texas, and moved to Arkansas City, Kansas after they married. Fred made his living as a painting contractor, and Pearl owned her own beauty salon. Their daughter, Sandy Summers, owns and operates the Summers Sporting Goods store on Campo Road.

Here is a list of the crime report from this week in 1962:

-An intruder at Foster's marketplace in Casa de Oro, stole 40 cartons of cigarettes, valued at $100, and a stamp machine. The suspect was a 19-year-old male.

-William John Hill, a Navy man, claims that four men beat him up outside the Rodeo Room Bar in Lemon Grove.

-Marie Camacho had her purse stolen. She said that she doesn't care about the money, but would like her immigration papers, her social security card, and her Mexican driver's license returned. (Good luck).

-About 2,000 rounds of .22 caliber ammunition was stolen from Summers Sporting Goods by a 12-year-old boy. He was caught by the store owner, and the merchandise was returned.

-Ramona Dawson, and her roommate Jane Winters, had their lingerie stolen from off a clothesline as it was drying.
