1959: Plans For Building Local High Schools Take Shape

The proposed sites would become Monte Vista and Granite Hills high schools.

As the region was beginning to take shape in the mid-20th century, the population boom meant that more and more schools were needed to accomodate the ever-growing number of students.

In this week in 1959, the Citizens Advisory Commision for the Grossmont High School District agreed that the urgent addition of two more high schools  was necessary. The committee agreed make a ballot motion, set for May 19, to use a $5M bond to costruct the schools. Members said that the schools sites were planned for Sweetwater Springs Boulevard in Spring Valley, and Madison Avenue and 4th Street in El Cajon, and would become Monte Vista and Granite Hills high schools, respectively.

In other school news, Mel Grant, principal at Mt. Miguel High School, was presented with a St. James bread tree, by the Spring Valley Girl Scout Troop 453.
