1955: New Fire Station Proposed In Spring Valley

According to the Spring Valley Bulletin, here's what was happening this week in  1955.

– Blueprints for a new fire station in Spring Valley were drawn up and waited for approval from the board of commissioners. Fire Chief Don Clark said the construction on proposed Fire Station No. 2 in Spring Valley would begin as soon as the plans were approved.

Six new firefighters have been approved to work at the station and two current officers, Ray Myers and Herb Preston, were appointed as captain and lieutenant respectively. Clark said there was also a possibility of bringing on nine additional firefighters if the budget allowed.

– The Spring Valley Lions Club sponsored a special dog show on Memorial Day. The Lions Club sponsored the All Breed Puppy Fun Match at the Sweetwater Dining Room and the event was the very first dog show ever held in Spring Valley.

Events were held for dogs in the two to four month age ground, the four to six month age group, the six to nine month age group and the nine to 12 month age group. There were also events held to show off obedience training and a beginner class for puppies. Registration took place at the event and cost $1. Trophies were given to the best dog in each event.

 

– San Diego launched the 4A Yellowtail Round-Up fishing derby contest which included prizes ranging from rods and reels to an outboard motor. The rules for the contest were similar to the San Diego Junior Chamber of Commerce Yellowtail Fishing Derby. There was no fee to enter, no age requirement and no obligation to enter the 4A derby. In addition to prizes, a queen of the contest was selected and received a two-day, all expense paid vacation to an Ensenada resort the weekend following the competition.
