Update: Mother Admits Daughter Drowned in Backyard La Mesa Pool

The mother originally told investigators that the children were found unresponsive in the community pool of the Lamplighter Village mobile home park, in the 10700 block of Jamacha Boulevard.

Update: Monday, May 13, 5:35 p.m.

Sheriff's deputies are now saying that the two children were found unconscious in a backyard swimming pool, at a residence at 10011 Sunset Avenue in unincorporated La Mesa, near Mt. Helix – not at the Lamplighter Village mobile home park, as originally reported by multiple news sources.

The mother, who was staying at the residence and awoke to discover her kids were missing, initially told investigators that the children were found in the pool at the mobile home park, later admitting they were in the pool at the residence at 10011 Sunset Ave.

She said she initially gave the wrong location because she didn't want her friend, who lives at the residence, to get in trouble for not having a fence around the pool.

During a search of the residence investigators located a marijuana grow in the basement. Investigators from the Narcotics Task Force were called in to handle that portion of the investigation.

The Sheriff's Homicide Detail, Family Protection Unit, and investigators from the Lemon Grove Sheriff's Station are conducting a death investigation on the incident.

Although at this point there is no evidence of foul play related to the child's death, the investigation is continuing. The friend, who dropped the children and mother off at the fire station, before fleeing on foot, still has not been located.

Original story:

An 18-month old girl died Monday in an apparent drowning accident in Spring Valley.

NBC7 reports that the girl and her 2-year-old brother were both found unresponsive in the community pool at Lamplighters Village mobile home park, located at 10700 Jamacha Blvd.

According to the report, the victims' mother was visiting another resident when the kids apparently wandered off and ended up in the pool.

They were driven to the La Mesa Fire Station 13 in the 9100 block of Grossmont Boulevard in La Mesa about 10 a.m., according to sheriff's officials.

After administering first aid, medics took the children to Sharp Grossmont Hospital, Lt. Mario Zermeno said. Shortly thereafter, the girl was pronounced dead, and the boy was transferred to Rady Children's Hospital, where he is in grave condition.

Deputies were searching for the man who dropped them off at the fire station. His relationship to the children, if any, was unknown. According to the report, deputies believe he may be wanted on an unrelated arrest warrant.
