Walmart to Open Neighborhood Market in El Cajon in 2014

The 40,000-square-foot store will employ approximately 65 people and help revitalize the Town and Country Village Shopping Center.

Walmart announced Monday it will open a new Neighborhood Market next year in the Town and Country Village Shopping Center in El Cajon.

The 40,000-square-foot store will employ approximately 65 people and help revitalize the shopping center, Walmart said. It will open in the first half of 2014.

"El Cajon is pleased that Walmart is bringing its Neighborhood Market concept to our city," said El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells.

Walmart Neighborhood Markets feature a wide variety of products, including fresh produce, meats and dairy products, frozen foods, dry goods and staples, deli foods, bakery items, canned and packaged goods, condiments and spices, pet supplies, household supplies and a full-service pharmacy.  

First opened in 1998, Walmart operates about 300 Neighborhood Markets across the country, including some 30 in California.

"A Walmart Neighborhood Walmart is a welcome addition to the community," said Eric Lund, General Manager for the San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce. "It will provide additional options for grocery shopping for our residents and will strengthen our local economy through new jobs and improved business activity for the region as a result."

Walmart operates 24 stores in San Diego County, including 12 general merchandise stores, nine supercenters, two Neighborhood Markets and one Sam’s Club location. The new Neighborhood Market will be the second Walmart store to open in El Cajon.
