Take Me Out to the Islands: Helix Alum Tells Adventures in Baseball Branding

Former HighlanderJason Klein recalls an adventure in Venezuela as part of design job research.

When designing sports uniforms, Plan B. Branding founders Jason Klein and Casey White often visit towns to gain artistic and cultural insights. Usually this means harmless trips to a former airfield in Florida or a Midwestern mine.

On a recent visit to Margarita Island in Venezuela, the two were escorted by armed guards on motorcycles throughout their trip.

“The owner of the team was an incredibly wealthy 26-year-old kid,” said Klein, 31, who attended Helix Charter High School with White. “It was so Hollywood. It was like a caravan with the president and off we were into the city.”

The boys grew up a block apart and went to the same schools. They parted at college—football player White went to a Brooklyn art school and Scottie mascot Klein went to Alabama on a mascot scholarship—but together developed their business online and over the phone.

Now they serve dozens of minor league baseball teams and some major league clubs, too.

“We’re like outlaws for hire,” Klein said. “Every team hires us because they have some sort of business problem. So we kind of put a creative injection into their story and bring their brand to life.”
