Ralphs Demolished to Make Way for Ross, 2 Other Businesses

A Ross will replace the Ralphs supermarket that had been at the same location for more than 30 years until it closed its doors in February.

A 41,000-square-foot Ralphs in a shopping center at 8800 Grossmont Boulevard has been torn down and demolished to make way for a Ross and two other businesses, according to city documents.

The shopping center that also includes a Walmart, Toys "R" Us and Sherman-Williams is owned by Mann Enterprises and was first constructed in 1965.

Ralphs came into the shopping center in 1982 to replace a department store, said city of La Mesa Senior Planner Chris Jacobs.

The supermarket closed in February and will be replaced with a 25,000-square-foot Ross as well as a 2,800-square-foot business next to Ross and a standalone 4,500-square-foot business on Grossmont Boulevard.

No date has been set for the start of construction since construction plans are still being reviewed, according to the city's Building Division.
