Pageants Are in Fashion: Fundraiser Will Help Provide Scholarships

When Katie Martin , she knew the visibility would help her inform people about fibromyalgia, a musculoskeletal disorder that . She also knew the $1,000 scholarship she received would help her cover costs at San Diego State University, where she’s majoring in international security and conflict resolution.

“Community pageants are a wonderful opportunity to serve and learn more about your city,” Martin said. “It’s a wonderful platform to promote causes that are important to you, and with the help of our fundraiser, it’s also a great way to award the titleholders with much needed funds for education.”

She’s talking about , the third annual fashion show fundraiser that benefits the 2012 scholarship funds for all of the county’s pageants—Miss San Diego Cities, Miss San Diego, Miss Greater San Diego, Miss La Mesa and Miss Santee.

“Last year we raised over $3,200, and this year our goal is to raise over $5,000 to benefit all these wonderful pageant organizations” says Troy Hartpence, the Miss Santee pageant director. 

The event begins at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, in the La Mesa Community Services’ Arbor Room, and includes a silent auction and dessert reception. Tickets are $10 in advance and $20 at the door and donations are welcome.
