Jolt’n Joe’s Screening Big MMA Fight: Evans vs. Ortiz
La Mesa Boulevard sports bar gears up for free showing of UFC contest.
If you’re a fan of UFC’s Mixed Martial Arts but don’t want to shell out major coin to watch it on Spike TV’s pay-per-view, La Mesa’s is just your ticket.
“It’s basically like the new boxing,” said manager Tina Heschke. “Lots of bars will charge people to get in—we don’t.”
MMA originated from Brazil’s Vale tudo, and gained popularity in the US in the early 1990s. At first, it was designed to highlight the best martial art for unarmed combat, but has since transformed into a comprehensive sport requiring multiple skills.

“UFC has a big following with lots of fans,” said Heschke, who admits she’s only mildly interested in the sport. “It’s OK. It’s mostly geared toward men.”
The next big fight is Rashad Evan v. Tito Ortiz, which takes place at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6. A DJ and dancing will follow. For more information, call 619-466-2591.
